Abstract

633,400. Dielectric heating. AIRMEC LABORATORIES, Ltd., and WALKER, P. H. Sept. 5, 1947, No. 24549. [Class 39 (iii)] Loose fibrous or granular material, in layer form, is dried by its horizontal passage between plate electrodes, the upper electrode having a layer of insulating material on its underside, a current of dry air being passed between this covered underside and the opposing material surface. In a preferred embodiment, tobacco 10 is delivered through a shute 11 to a conveyer belt 12 passing between high frequency electrodes 15, 16, the upper electrode being covered, Fig. 2, with insulating material 18, which may be that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Mycalex." Air is blown continuously through a chamber 14 and electrodes by a fan 20, and may be heated by a heat exchanger 21 through which exhaust air from a radio-frequency generator 17 is passed. Alternatively, the insulating material 18 consists of bonded inorganic substances such as glass fibre bonded with silicone resin.
