Abstract
633,203. Filters; filtering media. HUNTINGTON, HEBERLEIN & CO., Ltd. (Molloy, E. N. H.). Oct. 22, 1947, No. 28234. [Class 46] [Also in Group II] Granular diatomaceous earth and zinc dust are added to gold or silver cyanide solution to precipitate the gold or silver prior to delivering it to a filter. Cyanide solution containing initially only coarse diatomaceous earth of preferably 100-325 mesh is pumped at 8 into a filter casing 1 having a removable top cover 2, and passes in parallel through layers of canvas or metal filter cloth 7 resting on the perforate tops 6 of four horizontal hollow trays 4 supported on brackets 5 and having outlet pipes 9 which embody quick release coupling devices 10. When a layer of filter acid is formed on the canvases, zinc dust is introduced into the solution along with diatomaceous earth. The latter is in the proportion of 25 to 30 per cent of the weight of the zinc dust. Preferably the outlet pipes 9 are led to, or each continued as, a pipe carried above the top of the filter to avoid eddying of the solution within the filter casing. Vacuum is applied to the outlet pipes 9 to dry the deposit before removal.
