633,120. Silencers for firearms. SILTO SOC. ANON. Aug. 6, 1947, No. 21417. Convention date, Nov. 21, 1946. [Class 92 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A silencer comprises a hollow body or a plurality of adjoined hollow bodies, the or each body being in the form of a portion of a cylinder, the section of which in a plane perpendicular to its generatrices includes a straight line portion and a portion of a curve of the second order having its concavity turned towards the straight line portion and wholly located on one side of the latter, the or a focus of the curve being located on or close to the straight line portion and the or each body further including an inlet conduit for a gaseous stream extending parallel to the straight line portion and transverse to the cylinder generatrices, the inlet conduit having its gas discharge end located at or close to the focus and including an escape outlet in the curved portion of the body wall in line with the inlet conduit. The invention is described as applied to an exhaust silencer for internalcombustion engines. Figs. 1 and 2 show such a silencer having three chambers 1 in series, although a silencer having one chamber only could be used. The exhaust gaess enter at 6 and pass in turn through the chambers 1, which are semi-cylindrical, to an outlet 5. Sound deadening material 7 is held in place by a metal netting partition 2. In a modification the sound deadening material is held against the curved surface 3 of the chamber 1 by a curved partition. Fig. 4 shows another modification. A chamber 9 is arranged to communicate with each chamber 1 through an opening 8. Alternatively there may be a separate chamber such as 9 corresponding to each chamber 1. In a further modification, Fig. 6, a partition constituted by two metallic woven meshes carrying between them asbestos, glass wool or iron scale is interposed between the chamber 1 and a second chamber having an outlet 12. The outlet 5 may be convergent in the direction of flow. The invention is applicable to intake silencers.
