Abstract

633,064. Treating sewage. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Guggenheim Bros.). March 22, 1946, No. 8957. [Class III] A method of treating sewage comprises immersing in a body of liquid sewage a solid support having a matrix of oxidizing bacteria therein, and maintaining in the liquid sewage dissolved oxygen in amount equal to not less than one part by weight of oxygen to one million parts by weight of sewage. In the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 3, sewage is introduced into a receptacle 10 provided with a cylindrical support 12 consisting of wire mesh elements 34, 35 mounted on a shaft 15 which is carried by adjustable supports 18, 20 and is driven by a variable speed motor 28. The element 34 is provided with helical ribs 36. The sewage is maintained in the receptacle 10 at a level below the top of the cylindrical support 12 so that portions of the support are alternately immersed and exposed to atmosphere. Oxidizing bacteria therefore build up on the support and feed on the sewage. The introduction, mixing and withdrawal of the sewage are preferably so regulated that the average biochemical oxygen demand of the sewage undergoing treatment is about twenty parts of oxygen per million parts of sewage. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 7 a series of spaced fixed supports 61 for oxidizing bacteria is provided and oxygen is supplied to the sewage in the receptacle 50 by means of a rotary agitator 62 which is adapted to splash the sewage over the top of a partition 53 on to the supports 61.
