Abstract

682,582. Treating sewage. GUGGENHEIM, S. R., and SMITH, E. A. C., (trading as GUGGENHEIM BROS.). Nov. 29, 1947 [Nov. 29, 1946], No. 31627/47. Class 111 The method of Specification 633,064 is modified by the incorporation of previously-formed sewage sludge in the sewage undergoing treatment. As shown, raw sewage is pumped by a pump 80 into a standpipe 81 where it is mixed with supernatant liquid from a thickener 84 and with excess sludge from a clarifier 90 before passing to a preliminary settling tank 82. The overflow from the tank 82 then passes with sludge from the clarifier 90 to the inlet box 86 of the main part of the plant, from which inlet box it passes into a retention and mixing tank 87 in which rotates a partially-submerged matrix support 89 comprising two concentric wire-mesh cylinders having helical vanes on the outer one as described in Specification 633,064. The sludge-sewage mixture, after aeration and biological treatment in the tank 87, passes to the clarifier 90 from which pure effluent is withdrawn, and the sludge from which is disposed of as described above. The input to the thickener 84 consists of settled sludge from the preliminary settles 82, and the thickened sludge from the thickener 84 may be treated with lime at 93 before passing to a sludge filter 85. Raking mechanism may be provided in the clarifier 90. Specification 682,583 also is referred to.
