1372367 Activated sludge process and apparatus NETHERLANDS ORGANISATION FOR APPLIED SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ON BEHALF OF PUBLIC HEALTH 4 Oct 1971 [5 Oct 1970] 46032/71 Heading C1C In an activated sludge process sewage is fed into an aeration zone, mixed therein with activated sludge, and aerated for 3-12 times as long as the mixing period, and effluent is discharged to a settling zone from which sludge is returned to the aeration zone. The mean residue time of the sewage in the aeration zone is at least one day. In the process mixing takes place during the feeding-in period, discharging takes place during the aeration period, and aerating may take place during the feeding-in period. Iron salts may be added to the sewage or activated sludge mixture to aid in phosphate removal from the sewage. The process removes 90% or more of the nitrogen in the sewage. A suitable apparatus comprises four aeration tanks 1-4 (3-8 aeration tanks may be used) connected in parallel, settling tank 17, rotating means 5 for supplying sewage and activated sludge to the tanks 1-4 in turn, and valves (e.g. sliding) 10-14 for allowing discharge of liquid from tanks 1-4 in turn. The means 5 comprises two concentric compartments 21, 22 which receive sewage and sludge respectively and discharge it through openings 23, 24 respectively. Sewage is fed into one tank while sludge is fed into an adjacent tank. The apparatus comprises sieving device 29 and may comprise means for regulating the rate of discharge from the tanks 1-4, e.g. electrodes, time switches or level sensing means. The aerators 6-9 are preferably floating aerators with a vertical shaft. Below the aerators telescopic tubular arrangements may be provided to aid in the circulation of liquid in the tanks 1-4.
