Abstract

632,793. Fixing bristles; rotary brushes; stocks. BLACK & DECKER MANUFACTURING CO. July 19, 1946, No. 21674. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1945. [Class 19] A rotary brush comprises a tuft-holding disc, U-shaped tufts mounted at their bight circumferentially in the disc, each tuft extending radially from both sides of the disc, the disc being cut radially from a central opening to form an even number of segments disposed circularly about the central opening, each alternate segment being bent to project from an opposite side of the disc, there being a plurality of segments on each side and an end plate secured to each side of the disc and spaced therefrom by said segments to hold the tufts outwardly radially parallel to the disc. The invention also relates to a rotary brush comprising a tuft-holding disc having a plurality of groups of bristles inserted in axial openings in the circumferential margin of the disc and bent outwards to form tufts each of which projects radially from both sides of the disc, the disc being cut radially from the centre to define a plurality of spacer sections which are bent outwards so as to form projections extending alternately from opposite faces of the disc and disposed circularly in coaxial relation to the centre of the disc, there being a plurality of projections on each face of the disc, an end plate disposed on each face of the disc and means for securing the assembled parts together, the end plates having appropriate parts which register with the said spacer projections in order to maintain the disc and end plates in rigid spaced and radial relation when the parts are secured together; if desired, there may be a plurality of such tufted discs placed face-toface with the spacer projections of each disc being directed towards and adapted to register with those of the adjacent disc or discs, thus to space the discs sufficiently apart to permit the tufts to pass therebetween. As shown, Fig. 3, tufts 1 of wire bristles are placed in openings 2 of the disc 3 whereupon the outer periphery of the disc is clamped inwardly upon the centres of the tufts as at 4. The centre of the disc then has slits 5 cut radially therein, preferably six in number, and the resulting segments 6, 7 are struck out sideways, alternate segments being on opposite faces. The brush shown in Fig. 1 comprises a single such tufted disc with an end plate 10 on either side, which plates are turned inwardly at the centre 11 to form an arbor support, stamped with a shoulder 12 conforming to the outer shape of segments 6, 7 and scalloped in the outer periphery 13 both for strength and to form gripping sockets for the tufts; rivets 14 secure the plates to the disc. Fig. 6 shows a rotary brush having a plurality of discs and adjacent projections in register. Specification 632,792 and U.S.A. Specification 2,290,575 are referred to.
