Abstract

The curing to the insoluble, infusible state of acetone-soluble copolymers derived from diallylic fumarates, e.g. diallyl or dimethallyl fumarates, and styrene or a derivative thereof e.g. p-chlorostyrene and p-methyl-styrene, is accelerated by the addition to their solutions of soluble manganese salts or soaps, e.g. manganese chloride, acetate, 2-ethyl-hexanoate, linoleate, naphthenate and resinate. The soluble copolymer may be prepared by halting the polymerization short of the gel stage or by polymerizing in the presence of a regulator, e.g. allyl or methallyl alcohol, as described in Specification 606,080, or a mono-olefine, e.g. ethylene, propylene, isobutylene, diisobutylene, triisobutylene, butene, hexene, dodecene, cyclohexene, methyl cyclohexene and their isomers. Suitable solvents for the copolymers are xylene, toluene, acetone, ethyl acetate, methyl alcohol, diacetone alcohol, carbon tetrachloride and copolymerizable compounds, e.g. methyl and allyl acrylates, dialkyl fumarates and vinyl acetate. The solutions, which may contain titanium dioxide, may be used as coatings on metal, wood and glass. Interpolymers from diallyl fumarate, styrene, diisobutylene and, if desired, acrylic or methacrylic acid esters, indene or diallyl-oxyethyl fumarate, are prepared by refluxing in solution in the presence of benzoyl, acetyl, acetylbenzoyl, succinyl or tert.-butyl hydrogen peroxide and precipitating with a non-solvent.
