Abstract

632,020. Commutators for dynamo-electric machines. WATLIFF CO., Ltd., and HINCHLIFF, A. O. Jan. 12, 1948, No. 911. [Class 35] The segments 1 of a moulded commutator are formed with holes 2 which extend in helical succession around the commutator axis to accommodate a helical reinforcing wire 3 embedded in the moulded material 6. The wire is located during moulding by notches 5 in insulating spacers 4, and the ends of the spacers and segments are cut square after securing, to remove the irregularity produced by the axial displacement giving the helical sequence of the holes. In a modified form, the inner periphery of the moulded body is provided with spokes for bolting to the arms of a spider on the rotor shaft. The inner edge of the segments is reduced or the radial depth of the spacers is limited to allow passage of the moulded material into the holes 2. According to the Provisional Specification this result may be achieved by providing radial slots in the inner edges of the segments. Specification 624,859 is referred to.
