[Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIX and XXX] A valve, other than a stack valve, for controlling an opening to atmosphere in a water gas, producer gas, hydrogen or like plant comprises a valve member 17 pivotally mounted by a pin 7' on a lever 7 fixed to an axle 6 having a pair of wheels 5 which run on tracks 4 on either side of the valve seat 3 and operated through mechanism such that the valve member has applied to it, during the latter part of its closing movement, a load acting to retain it on its seat. As shown, the valve controls the opening 1 into the charger of a generator or producer to which coke is fed through a shoot 2 having a pivoted spout 21 connected to the valve mechanism for operation therewith. At each end of the axle 6 is fixed an arm 12 carrying a roller 13, these rollers coacting with cam surfaces 15a on arms 14 pivoted at 15 and loaded by springs 16. The valve member is maintained parallel to its seat by a rod 7' fixed to the pin 7<SP>1</SP> and sliding in a hole in a lug 4<SP>1</SP>. A bell-crank lever 8, pivoted at 9, is connected to the end of the lever 7 remote from the valve member and is actuated by a link 11. As seen in Fig. 1, after the valve member has reached its seat, the lever 7 is further actuated by the bell-crank lever to pivot about the pin 7' and raise the wheels 5 from the tracks so that the spring-loaded arms 14, acting through the rollers 13, load the valve member. In a modification, the spout, which is of slightly different form from that shown in Fig. 1 is connected directly by a link to an arm on the shaft bearing the bell-crank lever.
