Abstract

631,748. Spectrographs. HILGER, Ltd., A., MENZIES, A. C. G., and DOWELL, J. H. Jan. 29, 1947, No. 2834. [Class 97 (i)] A concave grating spectrograph comprises a slit, a grating, a photographic plate or film and a plane, cylindrical, figured plane or figured cylindrical mirror for forming an image of both the slit and the grating, and is so arranged that the slit, the grating, and the photographic plate or film and the images of the slit and the grating lie on a Rowland circle, while the plane of the reflecting surface of the plane mirror or, in the case of a cylindrical mirror, the generator thereof which lies in the plane of the Rowland circle, or an extension of said reflecting surface or generator, is maintained at right-angles to the line joining the slit and the image of the slit and passes through the centre of the Rowland circle. In an embodiment whereby different sections of the spectrum are brought into the width of a photographic plate P, a carrier for the grating G and the plate P is rotated about the axis of the slit S and a plane mirror M is moved to and from the slit with its reflecting surface normal to the line joining the slit S and the image S<SP>1</SP> formed by the mirror. For this purpose the mirror mount is connected by a link R to a pin Q on the plate and grating carrier, this pin being at a distance from the slit S equal to one quarter of the diameter D of the Rowland circle, on the circumference of which the grating, slit and plate are positioned. The length of the link R is also equal to D/4. Another form is described in which the slit, grating and photographic plate occupy fixed relative positions on the circumference of a Rowland circle and the mirror M is mounted on a carriage which is slidable on a bar, pivoted at the slit, and to which is pivoted a link, the other end of which is hinged to a fixed point midway between the slit and the centre of the Rowland circle.
