Abstract

631,687. Tinning. CARNEGIE-ILLINOIS STEEL CORPORATION. April 3, 1947. No. 9163. Convention date, April 23, 1946. [Class 82(ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Electrolytically tinned strip metal is sprayed on both sides with a coating of thermally stable vegetable oil such as palm or cotton seed oil, the excess oil being removed leaving a film adhering to the strip which is then passed through a thermally insulated muffle, the portion of the strip within the muffle being heated by the passage of electric current therethrough to a temperature sufficient to melt the tin before it leaves the muffle from which the strip is immediately passed through a quenching bath. As shown, the tin coated strip 1 is passed through a steam drier 8 to dry off any liquid adhering thereto and thence upwardly between nozzles 17 which spray oil supplied from reservoir 18 by pump 19 on to both sides of the strip. Excess oil flowing down the strip is wiped by pinch rolls 16 and delivered into trough 25 for return to reservoir 18. Additional pinch rolls 16a may be provided to remove any excess oil adhering to the strip after passage between the nozzles 17. The oil coated strip then passes upwardly into the refractory muffle 27 divided by inner refractory wall, 28 dividing the muffle into leg 29 in which the strip is heated from room temperature to the melting point of tin by electric current passed through the strip between contact rolls 11 and 33 and leg 30 in which the tin coating is melted starting at the top of the leg. From the muffile the strip passes immediately into a quenching bath 34. The muffle is heated by resistance elements 31 in the walls thereof to prevent loss of heat from the strip by radiation. The strip is maintained at a temperature above the melting point of the tin for such length of time as to promote an alloy bond between the tin and the strip metal and pin holes in the tin coating are substantially filled. Specification 557,029, [Group XXXVI], is referred to.
