[Class 44] A device for retaining a door or the like in an open or closed position of the kind comprising a permanent magnet e.g., on the door, and an armature plate of magnetic material e.g., on a fixed member, the magnet or the armature being resiliently cushioned so that the magnet is engaged squarely by the armature plate, and the device serves also as a shock absorber, is characterised in that the magnet is mounted in a housing formed from resilient material. The magnet assembly of Fig. 1 comprises a cylindrical or cuboid permanent magnet 1 in a pole piece 2. Fig. 5 shows a permanent magnet 1 arranged between pole pieces 2a, 2b and mounted in a housing 4 formed from resilient material with the operative poles flush with the face of the housing. Fixing holes 5 are provided in set-back portions of the housing. In the device of Fig. 9, intended as a door stop, the foot portions 2c of the pole pieces overlap, and the portion 6 of the resilient housing 4 containing the operative faces of the poles of the magnet assembly stands proud of the body portion of the housing so that the face of the latter does not impede engagement of the magnet by the armature plate. The invention may be applied to sliding as well as hinged doors, and to hinged or sliding panels, windows, fan-lights, lids or trap-doors and the windows, doors or wind-screens of vehicles. Devices according to the invention may be attached to the outside wall of a building to retain casement windows open at 180 degrees. The magnet may be a horseshoe magnet, the poles of which are close together.
