Abstract

1,059,616. Joint-making packing. B. F. GOODRICH CO. March 5, 1965 [March 5. 1964], No. 9516/65. Heading F2B. A magnetic seal for attachment to the face of e.g. a refrigerator door adjacent the edge thereof especially for double doors for openings without a central post, comprises a first elongated magnet 25, e.g. of barium ferrite permanent magnetic particles in a retractable elastomeric material compartment 15 of the portion adapted to make the seal with a magnetic material surface, such as in the case shown, of a similar oppositely polarized magnet 25<SP>1</SP>; and a second elongated magnet 26 laterally spaced from magnet 25 away from the sealing portion 15, the first and second magnets 25, 26 having magnetic poles of opposite polarity on their adjacent surfaces. The magnet 26 is of slightly weaker strength than the magnet 25, so that when initial separation movement of the doors takes place and the attraction between magnets 25, 25<SP>1</SP> becomes smaller, the attraction between magnets 25 and 26 retracts the magnet 25. A third shorter magnet 27 co-operates with the magnetic material of the refrigerator cabinet surrounding the openings. The compartment for the first magnet 25 is connected to the compartment of the second magnet 26 by flexible walls 17, 18, the wall 17 having a groove 35 to permit a hinging action facilitated by the thinner walls 18. The compartment 24 of magnet 27 is integral with the compartment 16 of magnet 26, which is integral with the body of the mounting portion 20, secured to the door by clips 21. The other sides of the door are sealed by elongated single magnet seals.
