Abstract

631,175. Radiators for heating buildings. VYMETAL, F. Aug. 22, 1946, No. 25131. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1945. [Class 64(ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] An automatically-regulated radiator 5 comprises an evacuated chamber partly filled with an auxiliary liquid 4 heated by an element into which steam under low or high pressure is passed, the outlet of condensed water being regulated by a thermostatically controlled valve actuated by changes in temperature in the room in which the radiator is situated. Steam is lead through a conduit 1 to a tube 3 connected to a regulating apparatus R, the condensed liquid returning through a valve 6 and a conduit 17 to the boiler. The valve 6 is connected through rods 7, 8, 9 to a plate 10 vertically slidable in the valve casing. Two membranes 11, 12 have one end fastened to the plate 10, the opposite ends being secured, respectively, to the lower and upper walls of the valve casing. Changes of pressure in a thermo-static tube 19, due to changes of temperature in the room, are communicated to the space 18 within the membrane 11 to actuate the plate 10. From above the plate 10 is acted on by atmospheric pressure and a manually adjustable spring 13, As the temperature in the room rises the plate 10 moves upwards to close the valve 6, reducing the flow of condensed water and hence the amount of heat communicated to the auxiliary liquid 4. The spring 13 may be adjusted by the' nut 14 according to an empirical scale on the valve casing, one end position of the nut corresponding to the minimum temperature necessary to prevent freeze-up and the other end position being set to prevent overheating. The auxiliary fluid may be. a hydrocarbon, such as benzol or carbon tetrachloride.
