Abstract

630,770. Grinding and polishing. BONEHAM, W. Sept. 13, 1947, No. 25124. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] An adjustable boring head comprises a transverse slide 3, to which a grinding attachment is secured, mounted on the head and adjusted relatively to the axis of the head by adjusting relatively to each other two internally toothed rings 6, 9, connected by one or more sets of pinions 21, 22, to two toothed wheels 19, 20, which are respectively fast and loosely mounted on the boring head, the wheel 20 being connected to the slide so that movement of the wheel will adjust the position of the slide. The ring 9 is located in a recess in the ring 6, and the rings are adjusted relatively to each other by a pinion 13 engaging teeth 11, 12, formed on the edges of the rings and secured on an axle 14, carried by a cap 16, rotated by a manually-operated knob 15. The wheel 20 is formed with teeth on its underside which engage with a pinion 26, the latter engaging a rack on the slide or, as shown, being on a shaft carrying a worm 27 which engages in a nut 28 secured to the slide. When it is desired to provide a coarse adjustment for the slide, the pinion 13 is moved laterally out of engagement with the teeth 11 on the ring 9 and locked by a pin 30 which engages in the teeth of the pinion 13 to prevent it from rotating. The ring 6 may be calibrated and an index mark provided on the cap 16. In a modification, Fig 4 (not shown), a coarse adjustment for returning the slide to zero position is obtained by locking the cap to the body part of the head by means of a set screw and plunger.
