Abstract

630,402. Grinding lenses. LONDON OPTICAL CO., Ltd., and BEARDON, E. W. Sept. 19, 1947, No. 25582. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] Lens grinding equipment consists of an attachment in the form of a lens holder comprising a lenslocating ring 1, a lens support plate 7 within the locating ring, and a universal joint 3, 4 between the support plate and locating ring. A lens blank 12, the underside of which has been ground, is stuck by pitch 13 on the support plate 7, the pitch being broken away at appropriate places to allow locator pins 11 to contact the ground surface of the blank. The pins 11 are adjustable for height and radial setting on the locating ring 1, which carries the socket 3, preferably split, for the universal joint and a clamping screw 2. The ball 4 of the universal joint has a tubular extension 6 provided with a clamping screw 10 for the support plate 7. A third clamping screw 15 secures the locating ring 1 in a mounting ring 14 which has a tapered bore 17 to fit a correspondingly shaped post on the machine table. After the blank has been attached to the support plate, the latter is clamped to the tubular extension 6 and the socket 3 is inserted into the locating ring 1 until all of the locator pins are in contact with the underside of the lens blank, the universal joint compensating for any malalignment of the lens in relation to the support plate. The complete assembly is now mounted on the machine. For spherical lenses, the locator pins may be replaced by rings or segments. Different types of support plate 7 may also be provided.
