Abstract
708,448. Levelling heads for surveying &c. instruments. KERN & CO. AKT.-GES. Sept. 14, 1951 [Sept. 14, 1950], No. 21690/51. Class 97(2) [Also in Group XIV] A tripod for a measuring instrument comprises a ball joint formed of an upper part provided with a spherical zone and on which a supporting plate for the instrument is mounted and a lower part also provided with a spherical zone and which is engaged by a clamping plate, the parts holding between them an annular tripod plate on which tripod legs are pivoted, a central spindle formed integrally with the supporting plate and extending vertically downwards between the parts of the tripod so as to be free for limited angular movement, a clamping nut screw-threaded on the spindle to engage the clamping plate, and a removable lengthening rod secured to the lower part of the spindle. As shown, a hollow top part 3 and a lower part 4 of a ball joint rest on an annular plate 1 to which tripod legs 2 are pivoted, spherical zones 7, 8 on the parts 3, 4 being concentric but the radius R of the zone 8 being greater than the radius r of the zone 7. A supporting plate 10, resting on the zone 7, has a threaded stud 4, for connection to the instrument, and a vertically depending spindle 12 threaded at 15 for a nut 14 bearing on a clamping plate 13 resting on the zone 8. A cylindrical extension 5 of the part 4 is received in a guide 6 of the part 3. On the lower end of the spindle a removable, hollow lengthening rod 16 is adjustable axially. In use the tripod is erected over the reference point and the nut 14 loosened. The point 17 of the lengthening rod is set on the reference point and the spindle 12 is made vertical by moving parts 3, 4. A levelling indicator 19 is provided. Tightening of the nut 14 locks the supporting plate 10 and tripod plate 1 relatively to each other and when the instrument is screwed to the plate 10 only precision levelling is required. The lower part of the spindle 12 may be provided with a scale by which the level of the plate 10 above the reference point may be read from the upper edge of the rod 16. The rod 16 may be replaced by a holder for a plumb line. An optical plumb line may be used for centring the spindle 12 and setting it in a vertical position.
