Abstract
548,512. Theodolites and the like. COOKE, TROUGHTON & SIMMS, Ltd., and TAYLOR, E. W. Aug. 25, 1941, No. 10827. [Class 97 (ii)] The vertical bearings of the three relatively rotatable parts of a theodolite or the like are arranged so that the four cylindrical bearing surfaces lie on the surface of a single cylinder, two of the bearing surfaces being continuous. The upper and lower continuous bearing surfaces of a spigot 1, Fig. 1, carried by the alidade 2 are engaged respectively by the circle socket 5 carrying the circle and by the socket 3 secured to the fixed triback or base 4. The spigot 1 is provided with a ball thrust bearing 7 arranged between it and a plate 6 and the spigot 1 is retained by a central screw 8. The circle socket 5 carries a depending skirt 10 on which are arranged clamping rings 11, 12 and dies 13, 14 operated by knurled heads 15, 16 and floating links 19 ... 21 the casings 17, 18 of which are secured respectively to the alidade and the triback. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement in which the spigot 1 is secured to the fixed triback or base, the socket 3 to the alidade 2 and the socket 3a to the circle 23, the ball thrust bearing 7a being arranged at the top as shown.
