Abstract

630,325. Valves. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 22, 1946, No. 34713. Convention date, Nov. 24, 1945. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXVI] A valve comprises a substantially cylindrical housing with a bore extending the length thereof, inlet and outlet chambers 17, 18, respectively, a closure member 26 filling the bore in the closed position and provided with a metering portion 27, and an actuating spindle 25 which carries rackteeth 35 situated between pistons 28, 32 and engaged by a pinion on a shaft 37 extending transversely of and journalled in the valve body. The valve shown controls the fuel supply to a gas-turbine power plant. The shaft 37 carries a lever 54 connected to the pilot's throttle control. During the first part of the opening movement, a further closure disc 62 carried by spindle 25 moves away from its seat to allow fuel to flow to a chamber 22 from which it can flow through a byepass 65 to the outlet chamber. This supply is sufficient to allow the engine to idle, and the size of the byepass can be adjusted by a screw-actuated restricting pin 67. In the further opening movement, closure cylinder 26 slides out of the bore and the main stream of fuel is opened past the metering portion 27 which comprises ' " flats " on an enlarged portion of the spindle. Pistons 28, 32 are suitably packed, and the valve is balanced by allowing the inlet fluid to flow through a passage 77 in the spindle to act on the end face of piston 32. Disc 62 carries a packing ring 61 which seats on the edge of a sleeve 19 inserted in the bore. An indicating pointer 51 and co-acting stop 52 are provided.
