Abstract

Vinyl acetate or esters of acrylic acid or esters of methacrylic acid, such as the methyl esters, are copolymerized with maleic acid as by heating together with benzoyl peroxide in acetone and adding a non-solvent such as benzene or toluene to precipitate the product, and this latter is reacted in solution in acetone or dioxane with butylamine or other amine such as methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, amyl-, hexyl-, cyclohexyl-, dodecyl-, benzyl-amine, aniline, morpholine or piperidine; and the amidated copolymer is precipitated by dilution with benzene or toluene. The amidated copolymers are used to increase the viscosity of bone or hide gelatin solutions or gelatin-silver halide photographic emulsions.
