Abstract

Aqueous dispersions of water-insoluble acrylamide copolymers are freed from residual monomeric acrylamide by adding ammonia or a primary or secondary amine, in an amount of at least 1 mole per mole of monomeric acrylamide, to the dispersion and allowing reaction to proceed until substantially all the free monomeric acrylamide has reacted. The acrylamide copolymer may contain as the comonomer component(s) one or more of the following:-styrene and its substituted derivatives, e.g. vinyl toluene, acrylic and methacrylic esters, vinyl and vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile and vinyl esters. Amine reactants specified are methyl-, ethyl-, n-propyl-, isopropyl-, n-butyl-, isobutyl-, monoethanol-, diethanol-, cyclohexyl- and benzyl-amine, and morpholine.
