Abstract

1422302 Copolymer salts BAYER AG 31 Jan 1974 [31 Jan 1973] 04534/74 Heading C3P Alkali metal, ammonium or amine salts, suitable for use in anionic sizes for paper, are formed by neutralizing copolymers comprising the following units: (a) 0À5-50 wt. per cent of an imide of an α,#-unsaturated C 4-5 dicarboxylic acid, or a mixture of at least 70% of such imide units with corresponding diester, halfester, amide, ammonium salts or amide salts of the same acid; (b) 0À5-50 wt. per cent of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid; and (c) 40-85 wt. per cent of a vinyl aromatic monomer; these percentages totalling 100. The (a) units may be provided by using an imide as monomer, or by subsequent imidization of dicarboxylic acid, anhydride, ester, half-ester, amide or half-amide units. In examples, the ethyl or isopropyl half-ester of maleic acid is copolymerized with styrene and acrylic acid in solution in the presence of peroxidic or azonitrile catalysts; the resulting copolymers imidized with ammonia or 3-dimethylaminopropylamine-1; and neutralized with ammonia to form the ammonium salts.
