Abstract

Interpolymers are prepared by heating methallyl alcohol with at least one compound having the formula <FORM:0590373/IV/1> , where X may be CN or COOR and Y may be H, CH3, C2H5, or CH2COOR1, R and R1 being an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl group. Diallyl itaconate and methyl acrylate are specified. The reaction may be carried out in mass, solvent or emulsion, particularly aqueous emulsion, and in the presence of peroxy catalysts such as hydrogen, benzoyl, lauryl, succinyl, acetyl and t-butyl hydrogen peroxides, persulphates and percarbonates. The interpolymers are soluble in acetone, chlorinated alkanes and methallyl alcohol and may be cross-linked by treating with dibasic acids, anhydrides or acid chlorides thereof or diisocyanates. Fillers and plasticisers may be added. Filaments, sheets, castings and lacquers may be made with the products.
