Abstract

Copolymers of vinyl chloride or of vinylidene chloride with a diester of endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic acid are prepared by subjecting the mixture to the action of a catalyst and/or heat and/or actinic light. The process may be carried out in single phase or in emulsion and preferably in the presence of an inert solvent or in an oil-in-water type emulsion. Specified catalysts are benzoyl or crotonyl peroxides and ammonium persulphate. The preferred amount of the diester is from 5 to 50 per cent by weight of the chloride. Specified esters are the diethyl, dibutyl, dihexyl and di-2-(ethyl)-hexyl esters-the longer the carbon chain of the alcohol radical the better the flow properties and the lower the softening point. Plasticisers such as dibutyl phthalate and tricresyl phosphate may be present. The sodium salt of sulphated cetyl alcohol is specified as an emulsifying agent.
