Abstract

A mixture of vinylidene chloride and an ester or esters of maleic and/or fumaric acid derived from alcohols not containing aliphatic unsaturation is polymerized by heating in the presence of a catalytic per-compound. The ester comprises 1 per cent to 50 per cent of the mixture. Esters specified are the dimethyl, diethyl, dibutyl, dihexyl, dioctyl and dibenzyl esters or the esters from ethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers. Copolymerization may be effected in bulk, in the presence or absence of a diluent or in emulsion. Suitable emulsifying agents are potassium oleate, the sodium salt of sulphated lauryl alcohol or sodium isobutyl naphthalene sulphonate. Catalysts specified are hydrogen, benzoyl and crotonyl peroxides and ammonium, sodium and potassium persulphates. The products are soluble in cyclohexanone and dibutyl phthalate.
