Abstract
In a process for the manufacture of polyvinyl esters or vinyl ester copolymers, the monomer is polymerized in an aqueous medium having a pH of 2.8 to 7.5 in the presence of at least one free radical catalyst and an emulsifying agent of which at least 50% by weight consists of at least one water-soluble nitrogen-containing polyalkylene glycol which has been obtained from a polyamine having at least two basic nitrogen atoms and which contains a polyalkylene glycol chain containing at least one hydrophilic segment consisting of ethylene oxide unit containing at least three carbon atoms, the proportion of ethylene oxide units present in the hydrophilic segment being sufficient to render the compound water-soluble. Specified vinyl esters are vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, stearate and benzoate. Specified comonomers are vinyl chloride and esters of acrylic, maleic, fumaric and itaconic acids. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of other emulsifiers, e.g. oxyethylated polyalkylene glycols; stabilizers, e.g. alkali metal vinyl sulphonates and acrylamides; buffers, e.g. sodium acetate; and solvents, e.g. methanol or hexylene glycol. The catalyst may be a peroxide, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, potassium persulphate, ammonium persulphate, sodium perborate, potassium perborate, sodium peroxide, potassium peroxide or urea peroxide, or redox systems thereof with sodium bisulphite, rongalite or cobalt or iron salts. The catalyst and monomer may b added continuously or incrementally. The emulsifiers of the invention may be derived from ethylene diamine, propylene diamine, butylene diamine or hexamethylene diamine and propylene oxide, butylene oxide, amylene oxide or styrene oxide units, the preferred emulsifier being of formula: <FORM:0943198/C3/1> e.g. where x is 15 and y is 50. Examples describe the polymerization in the presence of said preferred emulsifier of (1) vinyl acetate and (2) a mixture of vinyl acetate and dibutyl maleate. The obtained dispersions may be compounded with pigments, e.g. red iron oxide to form emulsion paints. Specifications 466,173 and 922,457 are referred to.
