Abstract

Aqueous dispersions of a terpolymer of 5- 40% of vinyl chloride, 40-80% of a vinyl ester of a C 1 -C 18 acid and 5-25% of ethylene, the weight ratio of vinyl chloride to ethylene being 0À5-3 : 1 and containing, by weight of the monomers, 2-4% of a non-ionic synthetic protective colloid and 0À5-2% of a non-ionic emulsifier are obtained by mixing the water protective colloid, a catalyst and a buffering agent to maintain a pH of 3À5-7, introducing ethylene and maintaining an ethylene pressure of 10-100 atm. g. and introducing the vinyl ester at elevated temperature together with vinyl chloride and the non-ionic emulsifier in proportion to the consumption in the polymerization. The vinyl ester may be the acetate or propionate. The colloid is polyvinyl alcohol, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxymethyl cellulose or poly-N-vinyl pyrrolidone. Specified emulsifiers are condensates of ethylene oxide, ethanolamines or sorbitol, e.g. with fatty acids, tall oil, alkyl phenols, fatty acid amides and fatty alcohols, especially condensates of ethylene oxide with nonyl phenol and block polymers of ethylene and propylene oxides. Watersoluble peroxides or alkali persulphates are used as initiators, the mixture is buffered with secondary sodium phosphate and sodium bicarbonate and polymerization is effected at 60-70‹ C. Preferably during or after the polymerization there is also added a solvating agent which is a plasticizer, e.g. dibutyl phthalate, citric acid ester or phosphoric acid ester, or a solvent, e.g. methanol or a glycol. The dispersions are resistant to saponification and are used as binders for pigments, fillers and as mortar additives.
