Abstract

629,992. Carpet sweepers. WHITE AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Sept. 19, 1947, No. 25608. Convention date, Aug. 16, 1946. [Class 138(i) [Also in Group XXIV] A carpet sweeper of the type comprising an external casing formed with an open bottom and a brush rotatably mounted within the casing, has a dust box mounted in the casing and a brush housing disposed in the opening, each of which has oppositely arranged open sides and aligned end walls when in operative positions to form a single continuous dust chamber, the dust box having a bottom wall and being detachably mounted in the casing for dirt removal purposes, and the brush housing having a front and top wall structure curved substantially concentrically with the brush for dust guiding purposes, the brush housing having an opening in its bottom through which the brush is adapted to extend. A carpet sweeper comprises a casing 10, Fig. 2, in which are mounted a dust box 30 and a brush housing 24, each having oppositely arranged open ends aligned so as to form one continuous dust chamber. The housing 24 has an open bottom through which extends a uni-directional rotatable brush 23, the housing having an upper part shaped concentrically with the brush so as to form a passage for dust which is carried between the brush and housing over the top of the brush and finally discharged into the dust box 30, which is detachable from the casing 10 as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 2. The front edge of the box 30 is formed with a comb having a plurality of teeth 46, which engage the bristles of the brush 23 to remove dirt and fluff therefrom. The box 30 is held in position by a latch 43. Uni-directional rotation of the brush 23, Fig. 1, is produced by traction wheels 11, rotatably mounted in brackets 63 fixed to the sweeper casing, which wheels are geared to drive couplings 66, Fig. 3, connecting with each end of the brush shaft 80. The traction wheel 11, Fig. 3, comprising a tyre 52 mounted on a rim 50 carried by a disc 51, is rotatable about a fixed dished member 60. The ends of the wheel spindle 55 are supported in bearings 62, one in a back plate 64 of the bracket 63 and the other end centrally positioned in the yoke 65 of the bracket. Rotatable with the wheel 11 is a gear wheel 53. The gear wheel has a reduced portion 92 which carries a rockable yoke 91, Fig. 4, having two arms 90, which arms carry rotatable pinions 84 and 85. The pinions 84 and 85 are in constant mesh with the gear wheel 53. A spring 93, Fig. 3, having ends 95, Fig. 4, which serve to carry the yoke 91 around with the gear wheel, is wound around another reduced portion 94 of the gear wheel. The spring provides a friction drive for the yoke 91 from the gear wheel and according to which way the gear wheel is rotated by the traction wheel, either the pinion 85 is made to engage with a pinion 73 connected to the brush coupling 66 or the pinion 84 is made to engage with an idler pinion 82 in constant mesh with the pinion 73. For any direction of rotation of the gear wheel a unidirectional rotation will therefore be imparted to the pinion 73 and thus to the brush shaft 80.
