Abstract

<PICT:0629711/III/1> The distillation of an acid-treated mineral oil is effected with little corrosion or fouling of the distillation equipment by substantially, but not completely, neutralizing the esters in the oil with caustic alkali, and completing the neutralization with an oil-soluble material such as a naphthenic acid soap, an amine, an alkali phenate, a tetra-alkyl ammonium hydroxide, a tetra-alkynol ammonium hydroxide, or a fatty acid soap; the distillation is then carried out in the presence of the added materials. It is also advantageous to add a small amount of a mineral oil heavier than that being distilled. Acid-treated oil from tank 1, and caustic containing the oil-soluble "promotor" from tank 2, are pumped through meters 5 and 6 to plate-tower 8 which is heated by closed-steam coil 9 and evacuated via condenser 14 and line 15. In an example, an acid-treated catalytic naphtha was 95 per cent neutralized with caustic soda, and 2 per cent by volume of crude sodium naphthenate was then added: the neutralized naphtha gave a satisfactory result in a fouling test.
