[Class 43] In a bale tie comprising a metal plate 5 with a central flexible tongue 7 depending from one end 6a of an aperture 6 therein, one end of a metal bale band being looped round the tongue 7 and associated end of the plate, and the free end of the band being passed down through the aperture 6 to lie beneath the fixed end of the band, the free end bar 8 of the plate 5 is initially inclined upwards, and a transverse weakened section 13 is provided in the plate in alignment with the root of the tongue 7 so that the parts 15 bordering the tongue, together with the free end bar 8 of the plate, can be deflected. As shown, the weakened section 13 is formed by making recesses 11, 12 on opposite edges 5a of the plate 5, the centres of the recesses being slightly in advance of the root 14 of the tongue 7. In another form, Fig. 5 (not shown), the sides of the aperture 6 diverge towards the edges of the plate 5 in the direction of the root of the tongue 7, so that narrow portions of metal, at which the deflectable parts 15 of the plate may bend, are formed between said edges and root. When the plate is in position and the band is tensioned, on expansion of the bale, the parts 15 bend at the weakened section 13 and the tongue 7 is deflected, so that the tongue 7 and portion 15 approach one another to grip the ends of the band, the inclined end bar 8 of the plate finally lying parallel to the bale.
