[Class 78 (i)] In a machine for conveying and distributing documents and other objects of the type in which the documents .or the like are carried by carriers on a conveyer, each carrier delivering its contents to one of a series of receptacles according to the setting of means on the carrier, a subsidiary conveyer carries the documents or the like from a central position to the main conveyer and the means on the carriers are set under control from the central position when they are at such a distance from the point at which they receive the documents or the like that each carrier will receive the document or the like for which it has been prepared. The carriers 20, Figs. 4 and 5, are angularly adjustable on bridge pieces 13a mounted between the links 13 of an endless chain conveyer 14 and are set by a device 19 under the control of a keyboard 10 at the correct angle to deliver to one of the shoots 21 leading to receptacles 22. After leaving the setting device 19 each carrier travels to a point at which the correct document is inserted from an elevator 17 transferring the documents from a position adjacent the keyboard 10, then to an unloading position over the receptacles 22 and finally to a device 23 which realigns the carriers. The elevator 17, Fig. 8, comprises an endless chain carrying members 18, 26 between which and a pivoted member 28 the documents are gripped under the tension of a spring 27. At the upper part of the elevator 17 adjacent the conveyer 14 a roller 30 on an arm 29 secured to each member 28 engages a ramp 31 so that the member 28 is moved to permit the document to fall into a slot 32. In the slot 32, Fig. 7, are mounted two pairs of spring steel cams 37, 38 mounted on shafts 39, 40 to which an oscillatory rotation is imparted by chains 43 passing round sprockets 41, 42 on the shafts 39, 40 and operated by a member 44 on a rod 45. The rod 45 is reciprocated by a linkage driven by a lever intermittently operated by the passage of the link pins of the conveyer 14 so that each time a carrier 20 is opposite the slot 32, the cams 37, 38 are moved to eject the document in the slot 32 into the carrier. The setting device 19 is preferably controlled electrically from the keyboard 10.
