Abstract

628,982. Printing processes. HOE & CO., Ltd., R. (Hoe & Co., Inc., R.). Sept. 12, 1946, No. 27447. [Class 100 (ii)] In a driving mechanism for a combined printing machine and drying oven in which a conveyer is provided to convey the printed products to and through the oven, separate motors are provided, whereby the printing machine and the oven conveyer may be independently driven and drive control means is provided whereby one of the motors may be connected to drive the machine and the conveyer together and at the same time to bring them into synchronism so that the feed to and delivery from the printing machine are in proper timed relation to the feed to the oven. The printing machine 11, 12, 13, 14, Fig. 1, is driven by chain and pulleys from a motor 37 and a coating machine 19 and an endless conveyer 23 carrying sheets to an oven 24 are driven through shafting and bevel gearing from a motor 32. The motor 32 also drives a shaft 36 connected by bevel gears 43, 44, Fig. 2, to a shaft 42 which drives, by a gear 46 the outer gear 47 of a differential gear. The gear 47 is loose upon a shaft 49 adapted to be connected to the shaft of the motor 37 by a magnetic clutch 51, 52 and the gear 47 has internal teeth engaging planet wheels which mesh with a sun gear fixed to the shaft 49, the planet wheels being carried by a worm wheel 66 engaged by a worm 67 adapted to be driven by a motor 68 to bring the shafts 36, 49 into correct relative positions so that the printing machine and the oven conveyer are in synchronism. The motor 68 is controlled by a switch 71 actuated by a disc 73, Figs. 2 and 5, carried by a sleeve 74 slidable on a shaft 75 driven through reduction gearing from the shaft 42. The sleeve is urged by a spring 77 into contact with an arm 81 pivoted to a disc 87 fixed to the shaft 75, the arm carrying a pin 89 provided with a roller 92 engaging a circular track 93 in a plate 96 angularly adjustable on a hub 102 fixed to a shaft 103 driven through reduction gearing from the shaft of motor 37. The track 93 has a depression 95 which, when the shafts 49, 36 are in synchronism, can receive the roller 92, thus allowing the spring 77 to move the disc 73 to the right in Fig. 2 to operate the switch 71 to stop the motor 68. The operating of the switch 71 also closes a circuit to operate sheet feeding mechanism 17, and operate a stopping solenoid 132 to remove stop fingers from the path of the sheets to allow them to pass to the conveyer 23. Associated with the drives from motors 37, 32 are centrifugal switches 125, 123 connected by belt drives 128, 121 to the reduction gearing mechanisms 115, 109 respectively. The switches 125, 123 are in series with the operating relay of the magnetic clutch to ensure that both motors are running before the clutch is operated. In the normal operation of the equipment, the oven conveyer is first started by means of a switch, starting button, and a relay mechanism operating the motor 32, the switch having contacts in the circuit of the motor 37 which upon closing permit the motor 37 to be started by its own starting button. The starting button of motor 37 operates other relays which disconnect the supply from the motor 32. Motor 32 however continues to run long enough to maintain its centrifugal switch closed until the motor 37 runs at a speed sufficient to close its own centrifugal switch, whereupon the circuit of the magnetic clutch 51, 52 is closed and both the machine and the oven conveyer are driven by the motor 37. Simultaneous with the operation of the clutch 51, 52 the synchronizing motor 68 is operated and continues until automatically stopped by the opening of the switch 71. By the opening of this switch 71 the mechanism 17 and the solenoid 132 are both energized so that sheets are passed through the apparatus. The printing machine may be stopped but the oven conveyer left running, by the operation of a push-button which stops the feeding mechanism 17, operates the solenoid 132, disconnects the clutch 51, 52 and re-starts the oven conveyer motor 32 to clear the oven of sheets. To stop the oven conveyer only when connected to the printing machine another push-button is operated which decelerates the printing machine to a slow speed and stops the feeding mechanism 17. To operate the printing machine and oven conveyer separately a six pole double-throw switch is operated, isolating the interconnecting relays and preventing the clutch from operating. A separate switch operates the feeding mechanism 17 and the stop solenoid 132.
