1354634 Transferring signatures between gatherer and binder conveyers HARRISINTERTYPE CORP 28 Jan 1972 [14 May 1971] 4113/72 Heading B8A Signatures (not shown) are fed from a gatherer 10 to a binder 12, by pins 20 of a gatherer conveyer 18, pins 28 of a transfer conveyer 14, and pins 24 of a binder conveyer 22. The conveyer 14 is normally driven by both the gatherer drive-shaft 16 (Fig. 3) and the binder drive-shaft 42 running in synchronism by having clutches 40, 54, and 56 engaged. If it is necessary to shut down the gatherer, the clutch 54 is opened, and conveyer 14 continues to run until the signatures still in transit have been transferred to the conveyer 22. The conveyer 14 is then shut down by the action of photo-electric means 77. On restarting, the pins 28 on the conveyer 14 are brought into synchronism with the pins 20 of the conveyer 18, by having clutch 54 open and closing a clutch 72 between an auxiliary motor 74 and the drive shaft 62 of the conveyer 14. A cam 80 coaxially rotatable on the shaft 62, has a single lobe, the position of which, in relation to the circumferemtial length of the cam 80, corresponds to the spacing between adjacent pins 28 of the conveyer 14. The cam 80 is connected rotationally with the drive shaft 44 of the gatherer 10, and it is adapted to operate a switch 78 carried by a member rigid with the shaft 62. The switch 78 is positioned to correspond with the spacing of the pins 20 on the conveyer 18, and when operated by the lobe of the cam 80, simultaneously disconnects the clutch 72 and engages the clutch 54. The conveyers 18 and 14 are thus stationary but in synchronism. They are then restarted and brought up to the speed of the binder, when clutches 56 and 40 are re-engaged, and the system is then running normally, once more. There may be two gatherers and respective conveyers 14 feeding a single binder. When one gatherer needs to be shut down, the procedure described above is followed, while the other gatherer carries on feeding the binder normally.
