Abstract
628,531. Knitting-machines. WHYTE & SMITH, Ltd., and WOOLLEY, G. H. June 1, 1945, No. 13784. [Class 74 (ii)] To reduce the bulkiness at the join of each diamond shape of intarsia fabric, the two carrier rods 3a, 3b, of a straight-bar machine, having yarn carriers 4a, 4b, have their strokes increased and decreased by one and two needles respectively at the end of each traverse, so that at the junction of each diamond only single loops 30, 301 composed of two yarns are knitted in alternate courses. The carrier rods, which are reciprocated through a draw mechanism, are slidably mounted in cylindrical blocks 5 which in turn are rotatably mounted in slideblocks 6. The slide-blocks are raised and lowered in guides and the cylindrical blocks rotated by levers operated from the main camshaft. The carrier rod stops 18a, 18b, at each end of the machine, are adjusted by means of stepped cams 19a, 19b which are rotated at the end of each carrier rod traverse to shog the carrier rods. At the end of each traverse the carrier rods 3a, 3b are moved to the plain side of the needles and lowered so that the yarn is laid in the throats of the sinkers when the carriers are being shogged. One carrier 4b, the traverse of which is being decreased, is then shogged two needle spaces in the narrowing direction and the other carrier 4a, the traverse of which is being increased is shogged one needle space in the opposite direction. The carriers are then returned to their feeding positions for the next traverse. For providing consecutive diamonds of different colours a distance piece 22 may be inserted between the carrier rod and its stop to cause the rod and its carrier to traverse a different group of needles. Specifications 491,213 and 628,591 are referred to.
