[Class 64(ii)] [Also in Group XXX] A screw press, Fig. 1, comprises a frame 2 having a head 3; an imperforate barrel 11 fixed to the head and to the frame at points spaced apart and having a feed opening 27 and a discharge opening near opposite ends thereof; a pressure screw mounted on a shaft 21 which is within the barrel and extends beyond the discharge end of the barrel; and driving means for the screw mounted on the head. In the Figs. material, (e.g. corn cobs wetted with acid), is fed through hopper 27, Fig. 1, to vertical screw 21 which discharges it on to diagonal plate 8, Fig. 2. The screw shaft is hollow and includes two tubes; an outer tube 21, Fig. 1, having short separate spiral flights 24a and being rotated by driven shaft 16 at one end and being supported at the other end in circular bearing 10; and a fixed inner tube 32, so that water or steam may enter by pipe 39, Fig. 2, may circulate therein, and be discharged through pipe 36. Likewise, the temperature of the screw may be varied by liquid from lower pipe 29 passing through the space between barrels 11, 12 and out through upper pipe 29. This space is bridged by two longitudinal bars 26, Fig. 7, for the purpose of introducing adjustable pins 25 in the gaps between the spiral flights 24a of the screw, which pins help to force the material along by preventing the material merely rotating with the screw. The spiral flights 24a decrease in pitch towards the discharge opening. Also sleeve 37 is made angularly adjustable on its support 30 so that water to pipe 39 may be brought from any direction.
