Abstract
868,469. Continuous-discharge mixing apparatus. HUNTLEY & PALMERS Ltd. May 15, 1958 [May 16, 1957], No. 15536/57. Class 86 A continuously operable apparatus for kneading plastic masses comprises, an elongated casing 1, Fig. 1, formed from a plurality of semi-circular shells 2, 3 and 15, 16, the internal surfaces of the shells 2, 3 being provided with straight grooves 14, Fig. 3 parallel to the axis of the casing; a rotor 28 formed from cylindrical sections 38 provided on their external surfaces with helical grooves 40 co-operating with the grooves of the shells, and feeding means at one end of the casing and comprising a hopper 24 with a pipe 25 for liquid ingredients, a single start worm spacer by a sleeve 43 from a double start worm 44 mounted on the rotor shaft within the shells 15, 16 and rods 50 screwed radially into the sleeve 43 co-operating with radial rods screwed into the shells in the space between the worms. The pitch of the worm 44 is slightly greater than that of the worm 42. The lower casing shells 2 and 15 are supported by straight bars 4, 5, 6, Fig 3, carried by transverse webs 7 mounted on two channels of which only one, 9, is shown. The bar 5 fits in a longitudinal groove 10 in the lower shells. The shell pairs 2, 3 and 15, 16 are secured together by semi-circular stirrups 11 each having one end hinged at 12 to the bar 4 whilst the other end is secured by a screw 13, Fig. 2 (not shown) to the bar 6. Inclined side walls 71 connect the bars 4, 6 with the channels. At the right hand end the rotor shaft is connected through a sheer pin 57 with a chain sprocket 54 driven from means not shown. Referring to Fig. 3, when using the apparatus any one of the upper shells 3 is removed and replaced by a shell 3a having an outlet aperture 67 surrounded by walls 68, 69 and having an inclined plate 70 over which the kneaded material is discharged on to a removal conveyer. Alternatively the right-hand end of the casing 1 and the bearing 37 may be removed, the rotor then being carried by the left-hand bearing 32, so that materials are discharged from the end of the casing. Heating or cooling medium is supplied to the interior of the rotor through an elbow 66 whence it passes through a tube 64 and transverse bore 60 to diametrically opposed longitudinal grooves 58 which connect at their left-hand ends by channels 62 to diametrically opposed longitudinal grooves 59. The liquid passes along the grooves 59 back to a transverse bore 61 and thence along a bore 63 concentric with the tube 64, to an outlet elbow 65. In modifications the casing and rotor may rotate in opposite directions or only the casing may rotate. The materials passing through the annular chamber between the casing and rotor sections 38 are kneaded into strips of approximately elliptical cross-section.
