Abstract
627,885. Spinners. C.S.A. INDUSTRIES, Ltd., MARSHALL, F. G., and PAUL, P. Feb. 6, 1947, No. 3510. [Class 114] Prevention of ice formation about the entry 17 of a spinner of the type comprising coaxial inner and outer shells 10, 11 is effected by electrical heating elements associated with the inner and/or outer shells. As shown, heating strips 16 riveted to the shell interiors and comprising flattened helical coils of wire are connected in series and thence are connected by a lead 35 to a plurality of elements 18 disposed within the leading edge of fairing stays 14, and in turn connected by a lead 36 to elements 19 disposed in the leading edge 11a of the outer shell 11. Current is supplied from a slip ring 23a, lead 28, bush 32 and lead 34 to one of the elements 16 and returns from another element 16 through a lead 37, pin 31 and lead 29 to a contact ring 23b. In a modification the heating elements may be disposed externally of the shells and may comprise woven fabric. The elements may also comprise annular strips extending completely round the shell peripheries. Current is automatically controlled by a humid thermostat 47 having a manual override switch 48.
