Abstract

641,363. Electrically-heated spinners of airscrews. ROTOL, Ltd. Oct. 24, 1947, No. 28536. [Class 39(iii)] An electrically heated air screw spinner has equally rated resistances per phase adapted to vary the heat evolved per unit area of the spinner. By one means, Fig. 2, the interior of the spinner 10 carries upon insulation 16 a conductive layer 17 of carbon black or the like divided into radially disposed segments, current being supplied by spirally disposed conductors 19 having a spacing from one another that diminishes towards the nose of the spinner where a conductive cap 18 connects the segments to the neutral conductor. By a second means Fig. 4, an undivided conductive layer supports inwardly-directed supply conductors 23 terminating short of the neutral conductor at the nose cap 18 from which outwardly directed conductors 24 extend. By a third means Fig. 5, the undivided conductive layer supports inwardly-directed supply conductors 23 provided with a series of interleaved and arcuate shaped conductors 25, 26, the inwardly-directed conductors 23 terminating short of the neutral nose cap 18. The conductors are embedded in the conductive layer. If preferred, a conductive layer of varying thickness with uniformly or non- uniformly spaced conductors may be used. Instead of a conductive coating, the spinner may support inwardly directed heating elements 20, Fig. 7, between which other heating elements 22 are looped, waved, zigzagged or otherwise arranged and from which spirally wound heating elements 21 are connected to the neutral nose cap 18 in a manner ensuring a greater heating effect in this region.
