Abstract

627,705. Generating combustion products under pressure. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Aug. 16, 1946, No. 24419. Convention date, July 3, 1941. [Class 51 (i)] Pulverized fuel is burnt under pressure and the combustion gases are cleaned by separating the coarser ash particles and then separating the dust particles. The cleaned gases are supplied to a gas turbine. Pulverized fuel is fed from a storage bin 25, Fig. 4, alternately to containers 26 and 261. The container in use is closed at the top and the corresponding valve 27 or 27<SP>1</SP> is opened to allow the contents to flow by way of a motor-driven feeder 29 to an injector 32. Air flowing through the injector entrains the fuel and carries it to a burner 7 (Fig. 1, not shown) at the entrance 71 to a combustion chamber 1, Fig. 2. Air is supplied at 17 and passes through the annular space between the outer walls 4 and 41 and liners 16 and 5 ; part of it enters the combustion space through nozzles 10 and the remainder passes by way of outlet connections' 8 to the burner 7. A coiled tube for the circulation of cooling water may be located within the liner 5. Ashes.fall'through,an outlet 19 into a water container 33, Fig. 5, and are carried away by water flowing out through a pipe 38. Steam arising from the quenching of the ashes is condensed by water sprays from atomizers 35. The level of water in the container 33 is kept' constant: by a float 36 controlling a valve 37. Ashes which fail to be carried away are periodically removed from a pocket 40. Combustion gases pass by way of an outlet 20 to a filter identical' with that described in Specification 627,706; [Group XXVIII], for the removal of dust before being used in a gas turbine. An alternative ash removal means comprises a water-jacketed chamber 90 (Fig. 9, not shown) for. cooling the ashes, communicating through a valve with a drum for the reception of the cooled ashes.
