Abstract
A film of silica is deposited on a surface by immersing the article in a solution of fluorsilicic acid supersaturated with respect to silica to the extent of 2 to 16 millimoles of silica per litre of solution and keeping the article in the solution until the required thickness of coating has formed. Specified surfaces are those of vitreous, ceramic, or resinous structure such as glass, or urea-formaldehyde. In preparing a reflection-reducing coating the thickness should be a small odd multiple of 1/4 wavelength of light of predetermined wavelength. The solution may be prepared by dissolving in commercial fluorsilicic acid all the silica it will take at 25 DEG C. and then supersaturating by adding water or boric acid or sodium silicate.
