Abstract

626,311. Directive radio systems. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. June 19, 1946, No. 18432. Convention date, July 21, 1945. [Class 40 (vii)] Relates to means for producing a pencil beam of rotational symmetry about the axis of the beam having side lobes of negligible amplitude in an aerial system comprising a concave reflector energized by a primary element. According to the invention the reflector is formed by rotating a parabola about a line parallel to the axis of the parabola so that the system has an annular focus. As shown in crosssection in the Figure, the upper and lower sections of the reflector 1 comprise parabolas 7 with axes 13 and 9 and foci 12 and 8 respectively, the surface being formed by revolving one such parabola about the axis 3 to produce a circular focal line which is concentric with the axis 3 and passes through the points 8 and 12. The reflector has a flat vertex portion 6 through which a circular waveguide 19 extends along the axis 3 and the aperture 22 of the guide is enclosed in a coaxial cylindrical member 24 with one end plate 25, the annular aperture 26 between the guide and the open end of the cylinder forming the primary aerial element ; a stream-lined housing (not shown) of electrically transparent material encloses the cylinder and rigidly secures it to the guide. Such a primary aerial produces a quasi-toroidal wavefront with a doublepeaked directivity pattern, Fig. 3 (not shown), which is converted by the reflector 1 into a planar wavefront with the required highlydirective pattern of rotational symmetry, Fig. 4 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the cylinder 24, 25 is replaced by a simple disc 25 supported from the guide by an electrically transparent housing, the ring focus being between the disc and the end of the guide. Suitable dimensions are given for operation of both embodiments at a wavelength of 3 cms.
