[Classes 24 and 44] [Also ip Group XXXVI] In a socket for a mechanical joint comprising two similar parts. or half-sockets each formed with a recess or opening to receive a bulbous head such as a ball or part of a ball, each of the half sockets comprises a head, 1a, 1b, having a plane face A in which is formed the opening or recess 2a, 2b for the ball, the head being extended by a tail piece or lug 3a, 3b which is wider than the head and has a plane face B, the plane faces A and B meeting along the central axis of the assembly to form a right-angled dihedron. The two socket parts are arranged to be secured together by a single pin 5, Fig. 6, passed through holes in the lugs 3a, 3b, and the head of each half-socket has an abutment surface D to co-operate with a corresponding surface C on the lug of the other part to hold the parts against turning movement around the pin, the abutment surfaces being preferably slightly oblique to the axis of the assembly. As shown in Fig. 6, the pin 5 may serve to connect the socket to links 7 for the suspension of electric cables. Specification 625,981 is referred to.
