[Class 138 (ii)] Relates to a machine for washing and drying clothes, in which a blower 6 provided in the lid 2 of the machine casing 1 is adapted, during the washing operation, to force a current of air through a space between the wall of the casing 1 and an inserted clothes-container 9 and upwardly through the open bottom of the latter, and, during the drying operation, effects rotation of a drum 24 which takes the place of the container 9. According to the invention, the container 9 is provided with an inner removable cover 13 which is separate from the lid 2 and fits air-tight on the upper edge of the container so as to provide a space above it for the air current during the washing operation, openings 19 being disposed in the central part of the cover for communication with the inlet to the blower and being protected against spray from the container. The cover 13 is so shaped that it can, when for storage purposes the container 9 is placed inside the drum 24 in the casing 1, be disposed between the drum 24 and the parts mounted on the lid 2. The blower 6 is partly enclosed by a plate 7 which is secured to the lid 2 and provided with a central depressed portion 8. For use in washing, the container 9 is inserted in the casing as shown in the left-hand side of the drawing, and the cover 13, which has a central depression 14 corresponding to the portion 8, bears against a ring 12 on the latter. During washing, the air current from the blower 6 passes through openings in the portion 8, downwardly in the space between the casing 1 and container 9, and upwardly through the interior of the container to the inlet of the blower through the openings 19 in the vertical periphery of a guard plate 18 formed in the part 14 of the cover 13 and a central opening 17 in the part 8. The container 9 is provided with a removable base 20 of netting to permit removal of the clothes with the container. When the machine is to be used for drying, water is drained off from the casing 1, and the container 9 is replaced by the drum 24 (as shown in the right-hand side of the drawing) which is mounted on a pillar 23 carried by a tripod 22 placed on the base of the casing 1. The air current from the blower, after impinging against radial vanes 21 at the upper edge of the drum, passes downwardly outside the drum and upwardly into its interior through openings 25 in the inner wall 26 thereof; alternatively, the air current after striking the vanes 21 may pass either downwardly into the drum or both in this direction and into the space between the drum and casing. Water drains off from the rotating drum through a peripheral slit 27 in its base.
