Abstract

A combined washing and spin-drying machine comprises a single moulding of a thermoplastic material (e.g. high-density polypropylene) forming both an open-topped washing container and a casing for a vertical-axis spin-dryer basket, the container and casing having a common wall adjacent their upper ends. A horizontal-axis impeller is supported in the back wall of the washing container by at least one tie-rod 94 (Fig. 8, not shown) supported from a cross beam fixed to an outer housing. The moulding has a flange 22 (Fig. 8, not shown) around its top periphery which supports it at front and sides by hooking over the top edge of the outer housing. The back wall of the moulding is supported by the cross-beam. The moulding is held down by rubber grommets 42 (Fig. 5, not shown) fitting, radially compressed, in holes in the moulding and screwed to tongues welded to the upper edge of the outer housing. The shaft of the impeller is supported in a bearing housing which passes through a resilient radially-compressed bush fitting in a hole in the back wall of the washing container. The impeller is backed by a stationary plate inside the container. An outlet hose from the container is clamped on a metal sleeve 48 (Fig. 6 not shown) which fits through a hole in the container and has a flange inside the container, there being a radially-compressed resilient flanged bush fitting around the sleeve and in the hole. Fig. 7 (not shown) shows the shaft of the spin-dryer basket in a bearing passing through a corrugated rubber diaphragm fitting in a hole in the casing. The impeller may alternatively be supported by a thickened portion of the back wall or be mounted in an inclined or bottom wall of the container.
