Abstract

625,692. Gas-purifying processes. DE DIRECTIE VAN-DE STAATSMIJNEN IN LIMBURG. Oct. 4, 1946, No. 29703. Convention date, June 12, 1945. [Class 55 (ii)] A gas purification process comprises washing gases with an emulsion of two immiscible liquids, one dissolving the oily impurities and the other capable of chemically fixing at least one other impurity to be removed from the gas. For example, hydrogen sulphide and naphthalene are simultaneously removed by washing with a dispersion of anthracene oil in dilute sodium carbonate solution, subsequently treating the emulsion with air to liberate the hydrogen sulphide and naphthalene. Alternatively, and in the apparatus shown, a dispersion of tar oil in ammonia liquor is used. Coke oven gas enters scrubbers 1, 2 and 3 successively, being contacted with the emulsion in 2. The emulsion takes up carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and naphthalene from the gas and passes to a separator 4 where it is extracted with toluene or other hydrocarbon such as benzine, light mineral oil fractions &c. The tar oil and naphthalene are dissolved and the solution withdrawn from the top of the separator and distilled to recover its constituents. The ammonia liquor containing carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide and saturated with toluene is pumped to scrubber 1 where the toluene is taken up by the gas to be reabsorbed in the tar oil in scrubber 2. The liquor drained from scrubber 1 is regenerated with air for re-use. Water is drained through scrubber 3 filled with iron rings and serves to remove ammonia and carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides also being removed by reduction with the iron. The process is of particular use when the oil-soluble impurity content is small, the amount of solvent then required being small in relation to the volume of gas cleaned.
