Abstract

The removal of hydrocarbons, such as benzene and toluene, from coke-oven and like gases is carried out by compressing the gases and passing them through a tower against a current of heavy oils, after which the last traces of hydrocarbons are removed by treatment with cresol in a second tower.ALSO:In a process in which partly purified coke-oven and like gases are treated with sulphuric acid for the removal of moisture and traces of ammonia and soda, a small quantity of a catalyst, such as tungstic or vanadic acid, may be added to the acid to cause absorption of part of the ethylene, which may thus be converted into alcohol.ALSO:Coke oven and like gases, the constituents of which are to to be separated by liquefaction, are given a preliminary purification in which solid and liquid impurities, hydrocarbons such as benzene and toluene, hydrogen sulphide, and the greater part of the carbon dioxide are removed by known methods, after which the removal of carbon dioxide is rendered complete by treating the gases with a solution of caustic soda containing glycerine; this treatment removes also any carbon oxysulphite that may be present. Moisture and traces of ammonia and soda are then removed from the residual gases by treatment with sulphuric acid, and the gases may finally be passed through a vessel containing solid soda to remove traces of acid. In the first stages of the process, in which known methods are employed, the hydrogen sulphide and the greater part of the carbon dioxide are removed by treatment with an ammoniacal solution, which may be regenerated or distilled and, after further treatment with water to remove ammonia, the gases are treated as described above for the complete removal of carbon dioxide and carbon oxysulphide, if present.
