[Class 38 (v))][Also in Group XXXVIII] A rotary switch for controlling road traffic signals (see Group XXXVIII), comprises a disc a having insulated heart-shaped contact portions g on the surface thereof connected to slip-rings o and co-operating with a contact h. The latter is carried by a spindle j, which is rotatable in a pivot k in a disc b by means of a slidable sleeve n so as to vary the radius of action of the contact h and hence the relative periods of make and break. The disc a is rotatable by a constant speed motor which may also drive disc b through variable speed gearing, or, as shown, disc b may be driven by a variable speed motor f, the rate of relative rotation being adjustable to vary the length of the operating cycle. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), disc a is replaced by a drum, with V-shaped seg. ments thereon co-operating with an axially-adjustable contact.
