[Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] Apparatus for tracing the profile of a workpiece comprises a profile-follower element associated with a work-piece holder and a trace-forming element which repeats the movements of the follower element and which is associated with a support for a trace-receiving surface, all adapted for effecting in unison rectilinear relative traverse as between the follower and the work-holder and between the repeater and the trace-receiving-surface support, and wherein the work-holder is adapted for rotation through 180 degrees in the traversing plane and means are provided for transmitting such rotation to the tracereceiving surface support to allow the profiles of opposite sides of a work-piece to be investigated. The work-piece 8 is held in a chuck 3 which, with a holder for a recording surface such as a coated glass plate 10, is carried by a journal 5 held in a V-shaped groove in a standard 2 by a sprung cover-plate 6. A rotatable shaft 18 carries a repeater arm 23 and, adjustably secured on a guide 19, a follower arm 20 having a needle 12. The repeater arm carries a tracing needle mounted in a withdrawable sprung plunger 24 and may be adjusted initially by means of an adjustable stop 28 when the follower arm 20 is accurately located on an abutment member 29. The shaft 18, with the follower and repeater arms, is mounted on a carriage 11 which runs on balls contained in grooves in the carriage and base of the instrument and the carriage is preferably traversed by means of a handscrew 30. The follower needle may be replaced by a wheel or ball in which case the tracing element may be chisel-ended scriber of corresponding circular cross-section rotated by means of a belt-drive from a motor, which may simultaneously operate the traversing screw 30, or an ink scriber having a nib of corresponding circular cross-section.
