Abstract
625,116. Electric airfoil - heaters. GOODRICH CO., B. F. June 22, 1946, No. 18812. Convention date, July 3, 1945. [Class 39(iii)] A heating pad for preventing the accumulation of ice on airfoils comprises a sheet of woven fabric thinly coated on both sides with an electrically conductive composition 13 supplied with current by means of flat stranded conductors 14, 15, 16 and 17 stitched in spaced apart relationship longitudinally along the composition, the stitching passing through the sheet, the conductive composition and the conductors and the whole being embedded in a rubber body 12. The sheet is preferably of stretch resisting cotton, glass fibres, nylon or rayon whilst the conductive composition comprises resilient rubber material containing particles of acetylene black, channel black, graphite or other suitable conductive material. The conductive characteristics of the stranded conductors 14 to 17, or the conductive composition, or both, may be varied in the longitudinal direction to provide a uniform or graduated temperature along the pad. The arrangement of the conductors 14 to 17 enables the pad to be heated in a cyclic manner in which a longitudinal central zone 10b is heated during one phase and outer longitudinal zones 10c and 10d are heated during a second phase or the respective zones may be heated in sequence.
